Acts of the Apostles: Chapter 1
The movie opens just as the book of Acts does, with the events immediately following the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact, the first two chapters of Acts are Jesus’ only appearance in the film, as He informs His apostles of his imminent departure and triumphant return in the end of days. The apostles then watch in awe as He ascends into the clouds in a magnificent ray of light.
But the first and third songs from our soundtrack takes us back to before the crucifixion, to John 14 and 15. During that time, Jesus was surrounded by His apostles, and they witnessed his many miracles.
Even with everything they saw, however, His apostles still questioned Him.
How Can We Know The Way?
In John 14, Jesus teaches the apostles about the Holy Trinity. He is the Son of God, but also God himself. The Holy Trinity is a concept that is fundamental to the core teachings of Christianity, but often one of the most difficult teachings for young Christians to grasp.
Jesus begins by telling his apostles, “You believe in God. Believe also in me”, eluding to the fact that He and His Father are one in the same. He then tells them that they know the way to the place that He is going.
But Thomas is confused, and asks Jesus, ”Lord, we don’t know where you are going. So how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well”
This is one of my favorite verses of the Bible, and inspired the song titled “How Can We Know The Way?”, the third song on the soundtrack. And indeed, Jesus is the way. If we follow his teachings, and obey his Father’s commandments, we will be gifted with eternal and everlasting life in heaven.
But the apostles still had doubts. Phillip was the next apostle to query Jesus.
”Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us”, Phillip asked incredulously. Jesus answered him.
”Don’t you know me, Phillip, even after I have been among you for such a long time? Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father,” Again, Jesus is referring to the Holy Trinity. Then Jesus continued.
“So how can you say, show us the Father? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not say on my own authority, rather it is the Father living in me, doing His work,” he said.
Jesus is the Son of God, and God the Father sent his only Son to save us from our sins. He was doing His work through Jesus his Son. And just as God the Father exerted His will through Jesus, Jesus uses each of us to realize His divine plan and to do His will.
Have you ever wondered why there seems to have been so many miracles in ancient times, yet we do not see them in our modern society? But perhaps there are in fact still many miracles all around us. We’re simply just not paying attention.
The reality is that nothing at all has changed. Just as God the Father worked through Jesus to do His will on Earth, Jesus works through us every day. We are so busy with our jobs, families, entertainment that we miss many of His miracles. Pray to Him, watch and listen and you will indeed witness miracles too.
As I wrote in my very first blog post, Genesis, the soundtrack to Acts itself is a small miracle. Every day. I asked Jesus to help me spread the word of God. And God answered my prayer, manifesting himself through me to write these songs. The lyrics are from the Bible, and Jesus is the composer of the music. All the glory and praise to Him and Him alone.
